So Miley Cyrus Said What About Nicki Minaj

Nicki_betOh Miley … why are you doing this? In a recent interview with the New York Times, Miley gave her two-cents on Nicki Minaj’s Twitter rant on her VMA snub.

“People forget that the choices that they make and how they treat people in life affect you in a really big way,” she said. “If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it.”

The pop singer thinks that Minaj was only pushing her personal agenda and in the process she diluted the bigger message. “You made it about you,” she continued. “Not to sound like a bitch, but that’s like, ‘Eh, I didn’t get my V.M.A.’… If you want to make it about race, there’s a way… Say: ‘This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.”

“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj,” Miley said, “which, if you know Nicki Minaj it’s not too kind. It’s not very polite.” She added, “I know you can make it seem like, Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star. I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world. But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose.”

My two-cents: Did Nicki go a little over board? A tad bit. But she had some valid points. Why did TIDAL have no validity until Taylor Swift wrote an open letter? And the observation of who receives awards is able to be substantiated with ease. (And no I’m not counting Beyonce. Saying Beyonce got nominated is like saying you have one black friend.) Many non-minorities seem to be under the impression that if a cross is not burning in your yard or if you’re not being blatantly called the N-word little injustices are not occurring. Not so. Slights and discrimination happens much more discretely now. Furthermore, on Miley’s comment that Nicki isn’t very polite … the older I get, the more weary I am of beating around the bush. We’re all so conditioned to be polite that when we get the truth it’s seen as rude or abrasive or angry. Miley have several seats and stop addressing issues that have nothing to do with you. Seems like you have your own dirty laundry to tend to.
