Review: Lay’s Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger

laysSo Lay’s remains in the middle of their Do Us A Flavor competition where people all over the country submit flavor ideas for an opportunity to win money along with bragging rights of being the next Lay’s flavor.

Lay’s has narrowed the submissions to it’s top 4 flavors – Mango Salsa, Cappucciano, Wasabi Ginger and Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese.

Yes, I’m still working on getting bikini ready, but after trying the Mango Salsa flavor, I felt it was my duty to keep the challenge going and try a new flavor. This time, I went for Wasabi Ginger. I thought to myself, “I like wasabi. I like Asian food. Why not?”

However, let me come clean. While I love the kick of wasabi, I’ve never had wasabi and ginger together. Yep, despite the fact that it’s actually seved on the plate.

At first bite, this chip starts off rather calm and familiar and then right at the tail end there’s a little kick; a burst of horseradish wasabi flavor. Now it wasn’t completely bold – my eyes didn’t water, but the flavor profile was clear.

It took me getting to 1/3 deep in the bag to realize what that initial familiar taste was reminiscent of – sour cream and onion.

These flavors, plus the perfect kettle chip, came together perfectly.

If I had to compare it to the Mango Salsa flavor, I’d rate it higher by a long shot. While good, the Mango was a little overpowering in taste at first bite.
