The Roots, A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd to Headline Annual Roots Picnic

QuestThe Roots, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky and Erykah Badu (backed by the Roots), Phantogram and Rae Sremmurd will headline the 8th Annual Roots Picnic.

Boasting three stages and 18 artists, the Picnic will take place on Saturday, May 30 at Philadelphia’s Festival Pier.

Also slated to perform are DJ Mustard, Chronixx and the Zincfence Redemption, Hiatus Kaiyote, Afrika Bambaataa, Hudson Mohawke, Windows 98, Raury, King Britt, Bishop Nehru, Moses Sumney, Brianna Cash, Marc E. Bassy, and Donn T.

“I think this is one of our most diverse lineups to date,” said Roots co-founder Questlove. “I am looking forward to seeing the discovery process. That is what excites me each year. Seeing someone who bought a ticket for one act, discover the music of an unexpected artist. I’m sure there will be some A$AP Rocky fans that will dig Hiatus Kaiyote or some Weeknd fans that will discover Chronixx and vice versa.”

The festival’s larger lineup is a response to its growing popularity. “After last years sold out success,” says Shawn Gee, manager of The Roots and executive producer of the festival, “We mapped out a plan to grow the footprint to meet the overwhelming demand. We’ve added a 3rd stage which is located in a tent adjacent to the lots where we traditionally held the event. This opens up more area for the fans, allows us to book more bands, and increases our capacity by up to 50 percent.”

Tickets to the festival go on sale this Friday, March 13, at 12 PM.
