What on earth was happening today at the Capitol? I got Tweets there were gunshots and then about 10 minutes later there was another barrage of Tweets explaining the issue was under control.
Well here’s the skinny:
• A little after 2:00 p.m. EST there were reports of gunshots near the Capitol building. A shutdown was issued for the House and surrounding area.
• Soon after, it was reported that a woman drove her car through a checkpoint and sent police on a high-speed chase near the Capitol area.
• Witnesses said at least 20 police cars chased the car toward Capitol Hill, where the car crashed outside the Capitol.
The woman has been identified as Miriam Carey, 34 years old. She was a dental hygienist living in Stamford, CT. The NY Times reports that there was some difficulty identifying her because of the extent of her injuries. (Wow) Also in the car was a toddler.

Officers tried to dodge out of the way, but the Infiniti struck a police car and raced up Constitution Avenue, where it crashed into a barrier. The woman who was unarmed, got out of the car and was shot. The authorities took her to a hospital, and she was pronounced dead. A police officer and a secret service agent were injured as a result of a collision.
I wonder what on Earth would have made her do that? Friends say she seemed okay this week but some conflicting sources say there may have been some emotional issues w/ her. That would make sense of the situation because you can’t think you’re coming of a chase at the Capitol alive. Sad.
All this while the government shutdown was still in session. Whoa … it’s been a rough week for our leaders. We need to end this foolishness and focus on real issues.
