TLC’s CrazySexyCool Scores Big for VH1

tlc.ohsodjLast night’s airing of “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” – was a win for VH1.

The TLC biopic became the network’s highest-rated telecast in more than five years. The feature averaged 4.5 million viewers and is now VH1′s highest-rated original movie ever. The film also was the most tweeted program last night with 1.92 million tweets generated — four times greater than the No. 2 program, Monday Night Football, according to SocialGuide.

I checked out the story and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The acting was pretty solid – S/O to Keke Palmer (Chilli) and Lil Mama (Left Eye) – and their story was far more engaging than I even remembered. A couple of scenes that had surprised – the gifting of Rav4s, Dallas Austin’s effect on Chilli and I totally forgot T-Boz dated Mr. Dalvin.

Of course today, all the critiques of the film hit the net. One I did agree with was The New York Times’ note that not enough time was spent focusing on their accolades. While the drama was interesting, they could have tooted their horn a little more. So here’s some FYI ..

Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest musical trios. Between 1992 and 2003, the band had ten top ten singles, four number one singles, four multi-platinum albums, and won five Grammy Awards. At the end of 1999, TLC was ranked as the seventh most successful act of the 1990s by Billboard. In 2008, the group was inducted into the All Time Hot 100 Artist Hall of Fame by the same magazine, at 56th place. That year it was also listed as the #25 R&B/hip-hop artist of the preceding 25 years. According to the RIAA, TLC has sold more than 23 million albums and 6.5 million singles in the United States alone. Worldwide they have sold more than 65 million records and are ranked as the second best selling female group of all time, behind the Spice Girls. In 2012, TLC ranked 12th on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music, and as the number one all girl group.
