Drake – Would You Like A Tour Review

concert0v2I finally made my way to Drake’s Would You Like a Tour.

And I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.  Despite my concern that this event would be a little too emo for me – although Drake insisted that’s he’s not that guy – it was anything but.  Highlights include:

Jhene Aiko
Jhene Aiko was a nice break and mood change. Donned in a long lace dress, she appeared almost angel like.  During their performance of “From Time” and the second part of Come Thru,” the two were playful and flirty together.  When he flashed his million dollar smile her way, a little “Awwww” swept the arena. This guy knows that he has a great smile and has started to use that more and more to his advantage.  In fact, I propose that he may be far less emo than we believe.  He’s a little more mack than we give this guy credit for.  Love connection?  I didn’t see it on her face, but …..

Floating Catwalk
The floating catwalk was a special touch to the concert.  This was all for the fans.  Even the most stoic person was mildly giddy to see him that close. And he played it up (perhaps a little too long) shouting out individual members of this audience:

“I see you in the stripes”
I see you in the yellow sweater
I see you with the sign “pick me.”

Concert dynamics
There was no typical rapper’s back and forth pacing going on. This thing was well choreographed (as much as a rapper’s show could be).  His ability to both sing and rap helps out tremendously here.  The ebbs and flow from songs like “Hold on, We’re Going Home” to “Worst Behavior” kept the crowd engaged.  That fact was starkly clear when comparing to Future’s “performance” which unfortunately was monotone and aesthetically non-existent.  There was no stage set-up – just a DJ.  If you’re a Future fan of the course the music was enjoyable, but the presentation was reminiscent of a high-school talent show.

Drizzy was his own hype-man
Finally, a high point was just watching Drake enjoy himself.  I’ve seen quite a few performances that were done well, but were simply a job.  It’s always a treat to see a performer actually enjoy what he does.  There were quite a few instances where you could see Drizzy getting hype off his own music – Drake hands and all.  I’m not mad. Because we all got hype right along with him.

If you happen to be near an upcoming tour date, go check it out.
