Last month (Feb), French Montana launched his We Are the Dream campaign to help undocumented immigrants get the opportunity to further their education, amid the uproar surrounding Congress’ plans to end DACA. Yesterday (March 7), French Montana teamed up with People Chica to write a powerful letter on the power and importance of education.
Montana teamed up with Marie Groark, executive director of Get Schooled, for the We Are the Dream campaign. In the letter, Montana and Groark describe an exchange they had a student who was concerned about the future of their education, as an undocumented student who can’t afford to continue their studies.
“We are not political people. We are an educator and a multi-platinum hip-hop artist. But we believe passionately in the worth of every human being. We believe in the power of education to unlock human potential,” the pair write in the op-ed. “We work tirelessly to ensure that young people — wherever they may live, wherever they may attend school, whatever education their parents may have — have a voice to advocate for themselves along with access to the tools, resources and community that will help them fulfill their dreams.”
The We Are the Dream program’s mission is to help high school and college students gain access to the resources and tools needed to go to college. “I am one of tens of thousands of first- and second-generation immigrants that are having a significant positive impact on the United States,” Montana told Rolling Stone. “I am excited to lead others in this fight, to ensure Dreamers connect with support they need to get to college and make their American Dream come true.”
