Virgil Abloh Announced As Artistic Director for Louis Vuitton

Congrats are in order for Virgil Abloh, founder of the brand Off-White. Louis Vuitton has revealed that he will soon take on a new role as the latest artistic director.

The New York Times reported the news on Monday (March 26). Virgil joins Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing and former Givenchy designer Ozwald Boateng as one of the only black designers at the top fashion houses.

“I feel elated,” Virgl longtime creative director for Kanye West, told the Times. “This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.” Abloh celebrated the announcement by posting a picture of a Louis Vuitton monogram trunk on Instagram.

Virgil will be replacing Kim Jones, who left Louis Vuttion in January and is now at Dior Homme. When asked during an interview with Hypebeast to describe how he would label himself, the designer said: “More than anything, I feel like I’m a descendant of everyone from Kanye West and Pharrell Williams to Basquiat or Warhol,” and he will continue to operate Off-White.
