Tingles Don’t Make It Right

tingle_Old color photoI like a light fresh makeup look.  I don’t ever want to look “made-up” nor do I want my makeup to cover up the true appearance of my face.  We’ve all seen those people that when they don’t have makeup on you barely recognize them.  Instead, I like for my makeup to enhance. Perhaps make the little sparkle in my eye gleam a little brighter 🙂.

This is what a basic day consists of:

Aveeno Active Naturals Soy Complex Moisturizer   Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. I think this is the most important part to any beauty routine. Moisturizing is about allowing the skin to absorb water – not oil – through specific hydrating ingredients. To keep it real simple, dry skin loses elasticity which means it’s more prone to developing wrinkles.  It’s rough.  It’s dull.  If you have oily skin – like me – that doesn’t mean skip this step. It’s a myth that people with oily skin need to use a harsh drying cleanser and forego moisturizer.  By doing this, your skin will start to produce more oil. If you moisturize daily, you will regulate your oil production so it doesn’t overproduce. Try different moisturizers to see which formula your skin prefers, but don’t skimp!

Right now I’m using Aveeno Naturals Soy.  It’s supposed to improve your tone, lessen blotchiness.  Honestly I can’t tell if that’s happening.  I use it because it has a SPF 30 and it doesn’t cause my face to become oily or experience breakouts.  In my book this is a win.

bareMinerals ORIGINAL Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15

I’m not a makeup person so I like the easy application of the foundation powder.  I take a brush and throw a couple of strokes across my face and I’m done.  I don’t need to make sure anything is blended perfectly.  Everything will set perfectly by itself.  It’s super light.  In fact I don’t feel like I’m wearing a foundation at all but it gives me full coverage.  And once it sets, there’s no difference in its appearance from a traditional creamy foundation.  In fact it looks better to me.  I also feel like it’s more forgiving when trying to match your skin tone.

bareMinerals Mineral Veil

The Mineral Veil is completely sheer.  It absorbs oil and gives your face a somewhat airbrushed finish.  Like the powder foundation, you don’t notice it’s on.  I apply it either directly after applying my moisturizer or after I apply my foundation.  Either way gives the same affect.

Lancome La Base Pro’ Perfecting Makeup Primer  My mom introduced this to me a couple of months ago. It’s amazing.  The gel creates a visibly smooth base for makeup or you can just wear it by itself for a satin look.  It’s kinda similar to the veil I suppose but I still love it.  When I use it, it’s always directly after my moisturizer.

Burt’s Bees   I wear chap stick every single day – either by itself or under lip gloss.  Lately I’ve been using Burt’s Bees Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol.  It’s 100% natural, moisturizes my lips and gives them this fresh, tingling sensation that lets me know its working.

MAC Lipglass    I’m not a fan of the matte look of lipstick.  I want my lips to shine, but I want them to have a natural tint.  Guess I want my cake and eat it too.  My color choices are Viva Glam V and Oh Baby.  I abandoned pink hues as a teenager and never embraced reds.  It’s cute on others but it’s too bold for me.

Recently, I noticed that something was throwing the ph balance of my face completely off.  My skin was considerably oily for about 2 months straight.  For a while I thought it was just some sort of phase my skin was going through but it didn’t go away.  I tried weeks of switching up my facial routine – even my shampoo and hairstyles – until I finally found the culprit.  The most least likely suspect.

 The damn chapstick!!!!

Yes, that menthol stick was killing me.  As soon as I dropped it, all was well.  I searched the net for days to find anything that would corroborate my findings.  No such luck.

In the end, I learned to listen to my body.  I don’t need the net to diagnose every single thing.  We laugh at people who believe everything they read on the net, but I had somehow passively become a part of that population.

I was so convinced that natural and cool tingles meant it could do no harm that I was ignoring what was literally right in my face.

The truth is natural is just a marketing label and tingling doesn’t make it right!
