ALBUM REVIEW: “BackPack Travels” – Buckshot & P Money

backpackBuckshot, the Brooklyn underground staple who rose to fame with the Boot Camp Click and as one-third of Black Moon, has left 9th Wonder’s side to join forces with New Zealand beatsmith P-Money to craft BackPack Travels.

Self-proclaimed backpack rappers with a mainstream flow is exactly what the duo brings. These are 10 tracks reminiscent of that late 80s/ early 90s pure hip-hop sound.

Standouts include “Just Began” featuring Raz Fresco which brings braggadocious rhymes that reflect the epitome of the genre:

“Though they know they gettin’ their ass kicked
some old rappers still wanna compete in the masters.”

The lead single “Flute,” follows and brings that old school vibe that most glamorized music is missing – memories of shell-toed Adidas, beat-boxing. In the same vein is “We In Here” with a classic piano chop featuring David Dallas brings a grimey hunger.

Other guest throughout the set include Chelsea Reject, Steele (of Smif-N-Wessun) and T’Nah Apex.

What appeals most about this project is that the lyrics and sound are on even footing.  During a day of age when the beat outshines the content, this is a breath of fresh air.
