Drake Brings Out Lauryn Hill, 50 Cent, Usher & Others at OVO Fest

drake_ovoThe 5th Anniversary of Drake’s OVO Fest brought a slew of celebrity guests.

Drizzy had the bar set high with celebs including Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Nicki Minaj all being a part of past years, but he didn’t disappoint on Day 2 of the festival.

After a zen performance from WYLAT tourmate Jhene Aiko, the show seemed to officially kick off with the surprise guest Lauryn Hill. Lauryn started out with a reggae take on “Killing Me Softly,” which has doubled as the opener on her recent club gigs in New York and other markets. She brought fans back to who she really is, with a little “Fu-gee-la” and “Ready Or Not.” Just as “Doo Wop (That Thing)” warmed up, the man of the hour showed up mid-song to officially kick off his set.

But… not before he hugged his mom.

Drake didn’t hold back when talking about his friendship with Trey Songz. “This next person was the first person to ever embrace my music to ever do a feature with me,” he explained as he joined the R&B singer for their hit “Successful” and Songz’s smash “Na Na.”

Next up was J. Cole. “At this point in my life,” Drake says of the 2010 period, “I’m getting calls from the greats to write songs, be part of things, and while I’m doing that there’s this other guy who can really rap, he’s from North Carolina. And instead of becoming enemies, we become great friends.” J. Cole makes what has quickly become an annual visit to OVO, reprising his 2013 appearance with “Can’t Get Enough” and “Power Trip.”

Drake also used the occasion with J. Cole to kill any thoughts of beef with Kendrick Lamar. “Man, this rap game can get fucked up sometimes, they try to make stuff happen,” Drake says. “I wanna shout out my man Kendrick Lamar — he was on my album, I was on his, we were touring together. He’s one of the hardest n****s out there. He should be standing right here.”

Things got interested for the boy and audience when he flew out into the audience to say hello to fans. . “There’s not too many rappers who would do this shit, by the way,” he adds upon descension back to the stage. “It’s like me and One Direction or some shit.”

Rihanna didn’t make an appearance but Aubrih fans still got a special treat when her images of her appeared on the big screen during his performance of “Days In The East” alongside a flashing red “6” logo assumably implying that the track may appear on the upcoming album Views From The 6. (And 6 refers to Toronto for those believing in the satan hype)

PARTYNEXTDOOR kept the party rolling with a performance of “West District,” “Persian Rugs” and Drake collab “Recognize.”

From the Toronto portion of the concert, it was time to pay homage to his time in Miami and LA as he brought out DJ Khaled, Tinashe and YG.

Then, Usher appeared to take the show to the R&B side of things. Usher gave a full-length run of “Confessions Pt. II,” “Lovers And Friends” and “U Don’t Have To Call,” before gauging whether he can indulge the crowd in “my new shit that I’m cooking with.”

And after all that smoothness there was only one place to go. 50 Cent and his G Unit crew members Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo showed up to run through their “What Up Gangsta,” “Smoke” “I Get Money,” “Don’t Worry Bout It” and “In Da Club.”

Before Drizzy wrapped it up for the night, he let fans know that his hunger isn’t curbing any time soon. “I’ma let you know I’m about to go on this tour, and I’m about to come home and make the best I ever made for y’all.”
